Best Practices for Dog Owners During Strong Winds

When strong winds hit, it’s not just our homes and gardens that require extra attention; our furry companions do too. Dogs, being naturally curious, can be at greater risk during severe weather if precautions aren’t taken.

Here are some essential tips to ensure your dog remains safe, secure, and comfortable during strong winds.

1. Secure Your Garden

A garden is often a dog’s favourite spot to play. However, during strong winds, it can quickly become hazardous.

Check Your Fences: Ensure that all fencing and gates are sturdy and in good condition. Loose panels can be easily blown away, leaving an escape route for your dog.

Remove Loose Objects: Toys, plant pots, and garden furniture can become dangerous projectiles. Store them safely indoors or in a shed.

Inspect Trees: Be aware of any branches that might be at risk of falling and causing injury.

2. Supervise Outdoor Time

Even with a secure garden, it’s wise to supervise your dog when letting them outside during high winds. This ensures you can intervene quickly if anything goes awry, such as a frightened dog attempting to escape.

3. Avoid Walking in Exposed Areas

While daily walks are essential for a dog’s well-being, consider skipping exposed areas like open fields, coastal paths, or hilltops during strong winds.

Keep Them on a Lead: A sudden gust can easily frighten a dog, increasing the risk of them running off.

4. Create a Safe Indoor Space

If the weather becomes too severe, keep your dog indoors. Create a calming space for them to retreat to:

Comfortable Bedding: Provide a cozy area away from windows where the noise of the wind is less intense.

Distraction Tools: Use chew toys or treat-dispensing puzzles to keep them occupied and less focused on the unsettling weather.

5. Ensure Visibility in Low Light

Strong winds are often accompanied by overcast skies or even power outages, making visibility poor. Use reflective gear for your dog—such as a reflective collar, harness, or coat to ensure they remain visible at all times.

6. Double-Check Entry Points

Dogs may panic during high winds and attempt to escape through doors or windows. Double-check that all entry points are secure, especially if the wind has caused any damage to your property.

Strong winds can pose challenges for dog owners, but with a proactive approach, you can ensure your pet remains safe and secure. By taking these precautions, you’ll not only protect your dog physically but also provide them with the reassurance they need during unsettling weather. Remember, their safety and well-being are always in your hands.
